Informational Interview

For my informational interview I looked up an interview on a forensic scientist.

During the interview I learned that the most important skills you should have for this career field would be that you need to understand scientific principles as well as knowing how to conduct an experiment. One should know how to with conducting an experiment to create a theory and see if that theory succeeds or not. When working with a specific department it is key that you know the ins and out well enough to perform the task. It is also important that you can use and understand each instrument you are using to ensure correct results.

In the interview the question of stress came up. Being said that you are working with dead bodies or things of that matter its helpful to make jokes. Slowly building up a humor about it will in itself help when working on a crime scene etc.

The most challenging things with in the job would be to make sure that all of the evidence, and or test are performed correctly and to know the correct outcome of the test results. As these can be used in court and it is important that nothing has gone wrong. Along with seeing all of the bad that has happened to the victim at hand. The intervieie said that seeing what has caused a person to die has made people not want to continue with the work.

During the interview I learned that finding out the solution, or better what happened to cause this person to die is the most satisfying. Considering that that also is something satisfying to me makes me want to further find a job in forensics.

Career plan

My career plan with short-term goals would involve continuing in school in my intended major and minor. To keep looking at what internships would be the best to participate in and go after the ones that I qualify for. Along with continuing to look at grad schools after getting my Bachelors degree along with visiting schools to see what one meshes with me the best.

My career plan with long-term goals would involve the plan of going into a job of forensic technician. Long-term planning on what state I would like to live in in the future as well as specifically targeting what I would like to be working on. In my long-term goal I would hopefully like to be working in a big city on the East coast. Hopefully getting to be working on crime scenes and in the lab to determine cause of death, prime(s) suspect and more. Along with my long-term career goal I plan on participating in a internship dealing more closely with the specific job I want to go into.

Major and Career goals

My skill sets would include being able to work with others, having attention to detail, being able to give people adequate customer service. Along with being able to take an initiative in a group setting and being reliable.

I would say that my skill sets match with my desired career goals. I can further strengthen my skills by working on being more organized, ensuring that I prioritize my work better and ensure that I get things done by the deadline as in the line of work I would like to go into everything is going to mostly based off of a timeline.

I would say that my weaknesses are getting distracted somewhat easily, but am now working on bettering that weakness. That I need to be more organized in the future. As I can work on that by making a list of things that need to get done, what day’s things are due and better time management.

My intended major will further develop these skills, as I need to perfect my weaknesses, as they will become an important factor in my ability to work more efficiently on the job.

Ideal Job description

My ideal job description would include the following:

Starting in where I would be working. With a forensic technician position I could be working in places such as a crime laboratory, morgue, medical examiners office and a police department. I would be working in any and all types of weather conditions and any time of the day as there is no specific time into when you can be called into work. As considering you will always been needing to analyze evidence. Even though it is typical to work Monday through Friday it is possible to be called in on the weekends for an immediate case. Being a crime scene investigator I would be seeing a variety of crimes, making the regular cases be of those violent crimes. While on the job I would typically be working on the following, analyzing crime scenes to determine evidence, taking photographs of the evidence given at the scene. Along with collecting physical evidence such as weapons, fingerprints, and bodily fluids. In a laboratory on the job I would be dealing with the reconstructing of crime scenes, consulting with others in the field to determine a cause of death, possible suspects and possible weapons used in the crime. Also, having to do tests regarding the chemical, biological and physical analysis on the evidence taken. The average wage that a person would make is a little over $50,000 dollars a year. I would have to say that my dream job location would be working in NYC with the NYPD or in LA. Also working with the FBI would be the top of the list in having a dream job come true. This is something that has always stuck an interest with me and seeing that the job is becoming more and more demanding it should just give me the drive to want to top the rest.

If money was no object.

If I lived in a world where money wasn’t something that I had to worry about I think I would still want to go into forensics/be a pathologist. Even though that this job is a good source of income, its something that really interests me. I like the idea of helping people. In the world of Forensics there are many things that you can do with it. I personally would like to work on crime scenes or the medical side. Helping the family figure out what has happened is something that I want to do.

Even though it can be a good thing to study something that you think will bring you money, I also think that it is a good thing to go into something that you would want to do for the rest of your life. Someone once told me that if you had all the money in the world would you still want to do the job you have chosen to do.

At the same time I think that you should study something that you think will get you the job so that you can financially help yourself in the future. But I think it should be both as doing something that you think will get you the job but also picking something that you love as well.
